Bethlehem, Ancient jerusalem - city of david, walk down mt. of olives, dominus flavit church, church of all nations, gardens of gethsemane

We begin our tour in the footsteps of Jesus - in Bethlehem where his journey began. We will pass through Manger Square for a visit to the Church of the Nativity and take some time for souvenir shopping there. We’ll then visit the excavations of the earliest site of Jerusalem - where the Jebusite City of Salam became, under King David, the City of David, and later part of Jerusalem. We will then motorcoach up to the top of the Mt. of Olives for an unforgettable view of historical Jerusalem and a walk down the mountain following in the footsteps of Jesus and the Palm Sunday walk. Along the way we will remember the story of Jesus weeping over the upcoming destruction of Jerusalem at the Dominus Flavit Church, and the agony and betrayal by Judas at the Church of All Nations. We will plan on some time for prayer and meditation at the Gardens of Gethsemane. Dinner and overnight in Jerusalem.

We’ll conclude our day at the Garden Tomb where we remember the crucifixion and burial of Jesus, and will have time for communion if desired.
  • Day 05

Dung gate, Western wall, Temple mt. platform - dome of the rock and al-aqsa mosque, rabbinical tunnel, yad v''shem, israel museum, model of 1st century jerusalem

This morning we will continue our touring of the Old City including a visit to the Western (Wailing) Wall (most important site for the world Jewish community), the Temple Mt. Platform (once home of the 1st and 2nd Holy Temples and today the gold domed Dome of the Rock and the Al-Aqsa Mosque) and a walk through the Rabbinical Tunnel (dug by modern Israel to reveal 1st and 2nd temple structures). In the afternoon we will visit the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial, the Israel Museum’s Shrine of the Book (Dead Sea Scrolls on display) and a model of Jerusalem from the 2nd Temple period. Dinner and overnight in Jerusalem.
  • Day 06

Jaffa, Caesaria, Megiddo, Mt. carmel - elijah''s contest, Mt. tabor, Tiberias

With just an overnight bag we shall head west into the land of the Philistines to visit Joppa (Acts 9-11), and then follow the Mediterranean (and in Peter’s footsteps) northward for a visit to the beautiful coastal archeological site of Caesarea - designed by Herod the Great to be his capital. We continue on to Mt. Carmel, to the site where Elijah battled the prophets of the Baal and Ashteret. There we will have a breathtaking view of the Jezreel Valley, also called the Valley of Armageddon. We will visit Megiddo to see the site where 21 levels of civilization have been uncovered including one of Solomon’s famous fortress cities. We’ll drive around Mt. Tabor (perhaps over the spot where Deborah and Barak planned their fight against Sisera) on our way to Tiberias for dinner and overnight.
  • Day 07

Mt. of the beatitudes, 2000 year old boat, Boat ride on the sea of galilee, Capernaum, Tabgha, Cana, Nazareth, Bet shean

We recommend an early wake-up call to view a sunrise on the Sea of Galilee! It’s a breathtaking experience. After breakfast ride along the western coast of the Sea to the Mt. of Beatitudes where we remember the Sermon on the Mt. through prayer, singing and quiet moments of meditation on God’s words. Then view the remains of a 2000 year old boat, and we’ll enjoy our own boat ride from the Valley of Gennesaret to Capernaum (as Jesus probably often did). We will try to walk down to the Sea’s edge to the site where Jesus sat and had breakfast with his disciples (after the resurrection)) and remember where Jesus worked many of his miracles (including Church of the Multiplication, Tabgha). We will then drive through Cana on our way to Nazareth and a visit to the Church of the Annunciation. We’ll see sites from the Philistine/Greek/Roman and Byzantine city of Beit Shean and drive south following the path of the Jordan River past Jericho and "up" to the Holy City of Jerusalem. Dinner and overnight in Jerusalem.
  • Day 08

Southern steps, Dead sea, Masada, Ein gedi, Qumran, floating in the dead sea! perhaps we''ll even visit jericho if it is open

Around 1969 excavations in the Old City revealed part of the "downtown" of the time of Jesus as well as the actual steps the pilgrims would have climbed to go up to offer their sacrifices of atonement on the Temple Mt. Platform. Our last official stop in Jerusalem will be on these actual steps! We will then head out into the Judean Wilderness and then down to the lowest spot on earth - the Dead Sea. Our first visit will be to the mountain fortress of Masada where the guide will help you to understand the 3 stories told by the stones found there: the building of a magnificently beautiful fortress by Herod the Great, the plight of 967 Jewish refugees hiding up there, and the archeological excavations that revealed the stories above. From there we will head back north along the eastern coast of the Dead Sea to view Ein Gedi (where David hid from Saul), and visit Qumran the desert community involved with the writing/preservation of the famous Dead Sea Scrolls. Our official trip will conclude with a well-deserved float in the wonderfully relaxing and healthy waters of the Dead Sea (be sure to bring a bathing suit and flip flops). Dinner and overnight in Jerusalem.
